Global Language Heritage

Global Language Heritage

Preservation & Promotion of Language Heritage through ICT.

Overview

Language extinction is an immediate & alarming issue at world level. In the age of the Anthropocene, language extinction is happening faster than species extinction. Various efforts to save endangered languages can be seen at different levels. However, looking at the pace of language extinction, the efforts are insufficient to preserve even a tiny fraction of those languages facing immediate peril. 'Global Language Heritage' project is a mission to safeguard linguistic diversity with 'Language Preservation & Promotion' at collaborative & collective level with technological approach.

Background

Language is an asset of valuable scientific, cultural information, knowledge, history & beliefs. When a language is gone, the culture of a civilization is lost to the world. Every 2 weeks, a language dies. Over half of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken on the planet may disappear by the end of the century. Once the last speaker dies, so does the language. And for an oral culture, preserving language becomes even more important for maintaining the identity and heritage of a community. In earlier days, it was difficult to preserve languages heritage. But today we are gifted by technology. 'Global Language Heritage' is a mission to preserve native languages & dialects through Information & Communication Technology (ICT).

Ongoing Work

KHANDBAHALE.COM with linguists & volunteers are busy documenting language & dialects information with audio, video and text samples. This includes rare idioms, phrases, synonyms, antonyms, definitions etc. We are doing every possible to contribute with our technical skill sets in synergy with concerned institutions by not only documenting languages but delivering information in exchangeable formats on various platform. We are now in process of converting collected information into universally accepted data formats such as Unicode & mp3.

Outcome

Until now, we have documented around 2 million words in 11 languages under different domains. We have recorded around 2.5 hundred thousand words in audio format. Over 10 million transactions are recorded every month to know & learn this documented knowledge for study & research purpose via www.khandbahale.com products & services on computer, web, mobile phones & tablets.

Proposed Work

-         To identify & document vanishing languages/dialects by recording them in audio & video format. This includes recording events, personal interviews, filming documentary movies etc.

-         To convert collected information into exchangeable formats.

-         To create language resource & develop a platform to share information for education & research purpose.

Implication

As of 2012, world is counting over 6 billion mobile subscribers, 1 billion computer users, 120 million tablet users, 2.5 billion Internet Users with increasing usage of broadband & 4G connections especially from rural areas. Considering impact of technological revolution worldwide, 'Global Language Heritage' project can credibly contribute for 'Language Preservation & Promotion' through Information & Communication Technology (ICT).
