It is one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution and the official language of the Indian state of Goa, and a minority language in Maharashtra, Karnataka and northern Kerala (Kasaragod district). Konkani has a rich literary tradition dating back several centuries, with famous poets and writers such as Eknath, Sridhar, and Damodar Mauzo. Konkani has its own script called Devanagari script which is widely used to write the language. In terms of grammar, Konkani is an inflected language, meaning that the grammatical function of a word is indicated by its inflection, rather than by word order. It has a complex system of case markers and verb conjugations, as well as a rich system of particles that indicate various grammatical functions. Konkani is known for its rich vocabulary, with a significant number of loanwords from Portuguese, Arabic, and other languages. In recent years, there has been a push to promote the use of Konkani in education and government, as well as to increase the visibility of Konkani culture in the media. Many Konkani language movements have been formed to protect and promote the language. Although most of the stone inscriptions and copper plates found in Goa (and other parts of Konkan) from 2nd century BC to 10th century AD are in Prakrit-influenced Sanskrit (mostly written in early Brahmi and archaic Dravidian Brahmi), most of the place, grant, agricultural-related and names of some people are in Konkani. This suggests that Konkani was spoken in Goa and Konkan.
