About the Oriya Language

Oriya (ଓଡ଼ିଆ oṛiā) officially spelled Odia is an Indian language belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. It is mainly spoken in the Indian states of Odisha and in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. Oriya is one of the many official languages in India; it is the official language of Odisha and the second official language of Jharkhand. Oriya has a rich literary tradition, with the earliest known work being the "Charya Shataka" written in the 11th century by the Oriya poet Sarala Das. It has produced many poets and authors, including Fakir Mohan Senapati, who is considered to be one of the greatest poets in the language. Oriya script is called "Odia" script, it is based on the Kalinga script, which was used to write the language before the 12th century. Despite its rich history, Oriya has faced challenges in recent years with the rise of English and other languages. This has led to a decline in the use of Oriya, particularly among the youth. However, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, such as the inclusion of Oriya in the curriculum of schools and the establishment of Oriya-language radio and television programs. In recent years, the use of technology has also helped to promote the language, with the internet and social media providing a platform for Oriya speakers to connect and share information.
