About the Marathi Language

Marathi (मराठी Marāṭhī) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Marathi people of western and central India. There are over 68 million fluent speakers worldwide. Marathi has the fourth largest number of native speakers in India and is the fifteenth most spoken language in the world. Marathi has some of the oldest literature of all modern Indo-Aryan languages, dating from about 1000 AD. The major dialects of Marathi are called Standard Marathi and Warhadi Marathi.There are a few other sub-dialects like Ahirani, Dangi, Vadvali, Samavedi, Khandeshi, and Malwani. Standard Marathi is the official language of the State of Maharashtra. Marathi has a rich literary tradition, with the earliest known work being the "Dnyaneshwari" written in the 13th century by the Marathi saint and poet Dnyaneshwar. It has produced many poets and authors, including V.V. Shirwadkar, who is considered to be one of the greatest poets in the language. Marathi script is called "Devanagari" script, it is widely used for writing other languages such as Hindi, Nepali and Sanskrit. Despite its rich history, Marathi has faced challenges in recent years with the rise of English and other languages. This has led to a decline in the use of Marathi, particularly among the youth. However, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, such as the inclusion of Marathi in the curriculum of schools and the establishment of Marathi-language radio and television programs.
