The origins of the Malayalam language can be traced back to the 10th century with the earliest known work being Ramacharitam, a collection of poems written in the 13th century. Malayalam has a rich literary tradition, with many renowned poets and authors such as Kumaran Asan, Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer, and Vallathol Narayana Menon. Malayalam is also known for its unique script, called the Malayalam script, which is a combination of both syllabic and alphabetic elements. The script is considered to be one of the most complex scripts among the Dravidian languages. Despite its rich history, Malayalam has faced challenges in recent years with the rise of English and other languages. This has led to a decline in the use of Malayalam, particularly among the youth. However, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, such as the inclusion of Malayalam in the curriculum of schools and the establishment of Malayalam-language radio and television programs. In recent years, the use of technology has also helped to promote the language, with the internet and social media providing a platform for Malayalam speakers to connect and share information. Malayalam is a rich and unique language with a long history and a rich literary tradition. Despite facing challenges, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, and with the help of technology, it is possible for the language to continue to thrive in the future.

Malayalam thus translates as "hill region" and used to refer to the land itself (Chera Kingdom), and only later became the name of the language. The language Malayalam is alternatively called Alealum, Malayalani, Malayali, Malean, Maliyad, and Mallealle. Due to its lineage deriving from both Sanskrit and Tamil, the Malayalam alphabet has the largest number of letters among the Indian languages. Malayalam script includes letters capable of representing all the sounds of Sanskrit and all Dravidian languages.
