Global Language Environemnt: Save Paper - Save Tree - Save Earth!

Save Paper - Save Tree - Save Earth!

It takes the life of 8 feet high and 4 feet wide tree to make 20 copies of a common 800 pages booklet dictionary.

Overview

'Global Warming and Climate Change' is a hot issue facing world leaders. Various efforts at world level can be seen to safeguard the ecosystem by conducting different programs by social organizations and governments. However, high consumption of natural resources and rapid industrialization causes serious environmental imbalances are so vast and widespread that conservation efforts struggle to keep pace with the damage. It may not be possible for everyone to plant and grow trees, but definitely, each one of us can minimize the use of paper. 'Global Language Environment' is a substantial initiative to 'Save Paper, Save Tree' by promoting green practices in daily life.

Background

Saving paper is as good as planting trees. Production of 1 tone paper needs - 128 cubic ft wood, 55000 gallons (208200 liters) water, 46 kg sulfur, 159 kg lime, 1.2-ton coal, 9 kg dye and pigment, 49 kg starch and others. UNESCO counts 6 billion literate populations on earth as of 2012. Dictionary is an essential educational course-ware and each one of us buys at least 2-3 dictionaries during our lifetime. Have a look at the stunning facts and figures below about what we consume directly-indirectly (assuming each literate individual use single dictionary);

6,00,00,00,000(literate population) x 2kg (dictionary each) = 1,20,00,000 tones of paper.= 28,80,00,000 number of trees ( 1 ton of non-recycled paper uses 24 trees )

= 24,98,40,00,00,000 litters of water= 55,20,00,000 kg of sulphur= 1,90,80,00,000 kg of lime= 1,44,00,000 tones of coal= 10,80,00,000 kg of dye and pigment= 58,80,00,000 kg of starch and + ample of environmental resources.

Ongoing Work

KHANDBAHALE.COM in close association with concern individuals and institutions are promoting green practices in daily life. Together we create environmental awareness and insist practices for reducing and eliminating paper use to save our ecosystem. Since the dictionary is an essential education reference tool for everyone, it consumes a huge amount of paper at glance. We figure out to eliminate traditional booklet dictionaries by promoting computer, tablet, online and especially mobile based dictionaries freely. We are in association with universities of the world are working together to compile extensive vocabularies of diverse languages in different disciplines. This is one side of our 'Global Language Environment' project. What is more crucial is the distribution of it at the mass level. We are distributing free online and mobile-based dictionaries among students and different communities. We conduct road-shows, campaigns, presentations, workshops and every possibility to create environmental awareness, especially among youths.

Outcome

Impact

By promoting eco-friendly dictionaries, we have eliminated 200,000 tones of paper - which is the direct contribution of saving the life of 48,00,000 innocent trees. i.e. about half Crore of trees.

Proposed Work

- To eliminate booklet dictionaries completely.
- To compile and develop language learning tools compatible with multiple platforms.
- To invent more technological tools to live a paperless life at work and home.

Scope
