Santali Santali (Ol Chiki: ᱥᱟᱱᱛᱟᱲᱤ), also known as Santhali, is the most widely spoken language of the Munda subfamily of the Austroasiatic languages, related to Ho and Mundari, spoken mainly in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Odisha, Tripura and West Bengal. It is a recognised regional language of India per the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Santali has a rich oral tradition, with many traditional songs, stories and folklore passed down through generations. The earliest written texts in Santali date back to the 19th century, when Christian missionaries developed a writing system for the language. Santali script is called "Ol Chiki" script, it is based on the script used by the Santals, which is a tribe that speaks the language. Despite its rich oral tradition, Santali has faced challenges in recent years with the rise of other languages such as Bengali, Hindi and English. This has led to a decline in the use of Santali, particularly among the youth. However, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, such as the inclusion of Santali in the curriculum of schools and the establishment of Santali-language radio and television programs. In recent years, the use of technology has also helped to promote the language, with the internet and social media providing a platform for Santali speakers to connect and share information. Santali is a rich and unique language with a long oral tradition and a rich cultural heritage. Despite facing challenges, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, and with the help of technology, it is possible for the language to continue to thrive in the future.
