About Punjabi Language

Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ/پنجابی) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by inhabitants of the historical Punjab region (north western India and eastern Pakistan). In Pakistan, Punjabi is the most widely spoken language. Punjabi can be subdivided into two varieties, known as Eastern Punjabi and Western Punjabi. According to the Ethnologue 2005 estimate, there are 88 million native speakers of the Punjabi language, which makes it approximately the 10th most widely spoken language in the world. According to the 2008 Census of Pakistan, there are 76,335,300 native Punjabi speakers in Pakistan and according to the 2001 Census of India, there are 29,102,477 Punjabi speakers in India. Punjabi has a rich literary tradition, with the earliest known work being the "Janamsakhis" written in the 16th century. It has produced many poets and authors, including Waris Shah, who is considered to be one of the greatest poets in the language. Punjabi script is called "Gurmukhi" script, it is widely used for writing the Punjabi language in India, while the Arabic script is used in Pakistan. Despite its rich history, Punjabi has faced challenges in recent years with the rise of English and other languages. This has led to a decline in the use of Punjabi, particularly among the youth. However, there are efforts to preserve and promote the language, such as the inclusion of Punjabi in the curriculum of schools and the establishment of Punjabi-language radio and television programs.
